Tech tip 2: Pressure relief valves: Inspection, testing & replacement

All relief valves should regularly be inspected to check for contamination and corrosion.
If any debris in the valve cannot be totally removed or there is evidence of contamination, the valve must be replaced. Always wear eye protection when examining relief valves under pressure. Never look directly into a relief valve under pressure.

NFPA Pamphlet 58, Appendix D, recommends that relief valves on containers of more that 2000 gallons water capacity be tested at approximately 10 year intervals.

Small relief valves used on small DOT cylinders and small ASME tanks should be inspected each time the container is filled and be replaced at least every 10 years. The compact design, high pressure settings, and aging of the synthetic rubber seat discs could result in erratic operation of the valve after a number of years.

Protective Caps
All relief valves must be continuously protected by proper fitting protective caps. Ice, mud, debris and contamination can prevent the valve from opening or, if the valve opens, can prevent the valve from resealing properly. NFPA Pamphlet 58 requires the continuous use of protective caps.

Flow Rate Restriction

Stated Flow rates are for bare relief valves. The addition of deflectors, pipe-away adapters and piping will restrict the flow. To properly protect any container, the total system flow must be sufficient to relieve pressure at the pressure setting of the relief valve in accordance with the codes.

Short adapters and deflectors designed by RegO® for use with specific valves will restrict the flow only 2 to 5%. Use only RegO adapters on RegO valves. Adapters with sharp 90° turns will reduce flow dramatically. These should never be used because they can cause the relief valves to chatter and eventually destroy themselves. Long pipeaways with several changes of direction can reduce flow substantially. For more information consult your TEECO sales representative.

Tech Tip 3: Determining age of RegO products in the field

All ECII® products are mechanical devices that will eventually become inoperative due to wear, contaminants, corrosion and aging of components made of material such as metal and rubber. The environment and conditions of use will determine the safe service life of these products. Periodic inspection and maintenance are essential.

Because ECII® products have a long and proven record of quality and service, LP-Gas dealers may forget the hazards that can occur because products are used beyond their safe service life. The life of a product is determined by the environment in which it “lives.” The LP-Gas dealer knows better than anyone what this environment is. Since 1960, most RegO® / ECII® products are identified with an alphabetical code indicating the month and the year they were manufactured. Check the product for this code to determine age. If valves or regulators are repainted, take care to keep the date code clear for later identification and inspection. NOTE: All values are estimates and are provided for reference only. See RegO’s L-102 or
L-500 Equipment Buyers Guide for detailed information.

RegO high pressure first stage LP regulators: 1.5 million btu’s/hour

The LV3303TR is ideal for use as a first stage regulator on any domestic ASME or DOT container in propane gas installations requiring no more than 1.5 million BTUs/hour. It will replace the LV2302TR. The LV3303TR features a compact design which can be connected to the service valve using either a POL adapter or a RegO products pigtail. Its ideal size fits easily inside domes or collars, and its large, threaded 3/8" bonnet vent can be easily piped away in underground installations without the need for glue kits or extra adapters.

A non-adjustable negative direct acting design helps to keep regulatory delivery pressures constant, even as tank pressures drop. Negative direct acting design provides for excellent performance when needed most--in cold weather, when tank pressures are lowest and system demands highest.

Its large 1/4" orifice helps protect against regulator freeze-ups. The LV3303TR incorporates a built-in 1/4" FNPT downstream pressure tap for easy in-line checks of the regulator’s downstream delivery pressure.
It has a molded diaphragm that provides an O-ring seal between the body and the bonnet, and is fully painted red for complete corrosion protection. UL Listed.

Regulators are factory set to reduce tank pressure to an intermediate pressure of approximately 10 PSIG.
Call TEECO for specifications and ordering information.

Stainless Steel 15 PSIG LP-Gas Connector

Dormont stainless steel flex connectors offer greater safety than conventional epoxy-coated brass connectors. Physically stronger and more resistant to corrosion, crushing, kinking and cracking, they provide a longer and more trouble-free service life. Dormont connectors are design certified by AGA under ANZI Z21.24 and Z21.45 for indoor use and Req. No. 3-87 for outdoor use. IAPMO TSC 9-92 approved for mobile home use.

Household gas detector

The 100-HGD gas fume detection/alarm unit gives advance warning of gas leaks well below the hazard level (1/4th the lowest explosive level). It provides the homeowner more time to take action to protect the family and remedy the problem. Should propane be detected, alarm sounds and gas supply is shut off at an inline gas valve. One point or multiple point detection available. Operates from standard household current with 12V battery backup. AC adapter included.

Full Circle Hose Swivels

Designed specifically for liquefied gas service. They minimize hose fighting and simplify tank connections. Contains no rotating lip seal or o-rings to wear out. No lubrication, greasing, adjustment or periodic maintenance is required. All seal components are easily replaceable in the field. UL listed for use with LP-gas.
